How to Maintain Your Car's Top
Value
The best time to begin taking care
of your car is the day you buy it. If the vehicle hasn't been
professionally detailed, get a full detail as soon as
possible. Even if the car has been detailed, you may want to
invest in some very inexpensive protectants that can save you
hundreds of dollars in repairs later on.
While you are at your detail shop,
set up a monthly cleaning. You may only need a full detail
done every few months. In between, get a wash job done
regularly, and keep a good wax applied to your vehicle to protect
the paint from dirt, love bug and weather damage.
Keeping the jams and engine clean
and shined is important. The jams include all the edges around
your doors. Engine cleaning helps keep hoses from rotting and
cracking, and keeps metal parts from corroding. Also keep your
hinges greased on doors, hood, trunk, and gas lid to prevent rust
and corrosion. We use a professional product called ProShine
that's only available to professional detailers. Products like
these must be used with care by a knowledgeable detailer to prevent
injury or damage to you or your vehicle.
Professional interior dressings are
also important to keep your vinyl and leather in good
condition. We use Lexol in the brown bottle, and we strongly
recommend this product, as it is silicone-based, not water-based
like the leading competitor's product, which can cause surfaces to
crack.
One of the best things you can do
for your car is apply Scotchgard to your cloth seats and
carpets. Scotchgard creates a protective barrier against
stains, so any spills clean up quickly and easily. One can of
Scotchgard costs about $8 and can save you $300 to $400 on carpet or
upholstery work later on.
To use Scotchgard, make sure seats
and carpets are clean and dry. Use in a well-ventilated
area! Spray on evenly. Do not get on vinyl, leather or
windows. Allow to sit for 10 minutes. Reapply and brush
in lightly. Allow to sit for 10 more minutes. Apply for
a third time and rub in with a rag. Then let it dry
completely. We can apply Scotchgard for you. Just ask
about it when you bring your vehicle in.
